I-5 SUV Rollover Crash Slows Traffic, Incites Second Collision

Media sources reported that an SUV rollover crash slowed traffic on Interstate 5 in Redding Sunday morning, causing a second collision.

According to California Highway Patrol reports, CHP officers responded to the first crash around 11:44am. Three adults and a toddler were listed as being inside the SUV at the time it flipped. Officer Tim Larios explained that the driver of the SUV had drifted into the center-dividing lane, overcorrected the vehicle and rolled. The SUV came to rest on its wheels facing oncoming traffic on the Cypress Avenue off-ramp. Officer Larios said that a car seat saved the toddler from injury in the accident. A pregnant passenger was taken to Redding Hospital as a precaution.

Approximately 20 minutes after the first crash had snarled traffic in the area, a second, single-vehicle crash was reported on northbound I-5. The CHP reported that the driver involved in that crash didn’t see traffic slowing. The driver, in an attempt to avoid other vehicles, crashed into a guardrail. No one was injured in that wreck.

CHP officials are still investigating the first crash.
